Step 1: Cut your pieces. For my example, I will be making a 4 ¼"x8 ½" flying geese block. I'll use my flying geese to create a border on a large quilt I am currently working on. Since I am supposed to add ½" to each dimension for my pieces to cut, I will be cutting the following per block: 1- 4 ¾"x9" rectangle. 2- 4 ¾" squares.

As you may know, a flying "goose" is twice as wide as it is tall! On the bottom left here there's just one, so it should be a 2″ x 4″ block (if we start with 2″ as a base for calculating) then the dark green should be 4″ x 4″, the blue is 4″ x 6″ and so on, so the orange one I count 8 flying geese, that would be 4″ x 16″.

The Cozy Quilter Flying Geese Borders

Cut the Flying Geese square 1 1/4″ larger than the finished length of your desired block. Cut the four smaller Sky squares 7/8″ larger than the finished width of your desired block. Here are measurement examples of two common size blocks I use: 4″ x 8″ Flying Geese block: 9.5″ large square and four 5″ smaller squares.

Set aside the remainder of these two strips. Cut one 6½" square from two of the WOF strips. TIP 4 Make sure the blocks are pointing in the right direction. Sew one fabric square to the bottom end of each of your shorter pieced borders. The bottom end of the flying geese strip is the end that doesn't have the point.

Make 4 No-Waste Flying Geese. Cut one large square for the peaked fabric and four small squares for triangle fabric as determined using the instructions above.
