Step 1: Cut your pieces. For my example, I will be making a 4 ¼"x8 ½" flying geese block. I'll use my flying geese to create a border on a large quilt I am currently working on. Since I am supposed to add ½" to each dimension for my pieces to cut, I will be cutting the following per block: 1- 4 ¾"x9" rectangle. 2- 4 ¾" squares.

As you may know, a flying "goose" is twice as wide as it is tall! On the bottom left here there's just one, so it should be a 2″ x 4″ block (if we start with 2″ as a base for calculating) then the dark green should be 4″ x 4″, the blue is 4″ x 6″ and so on, so the orange one I count 8 flying geese, that would be 4″ x 16″.

Cut the Flying Geese square 1 1/4″ larger than the finished length of your desired block. Cut the four smaller Sky squares 7/8″ larger than the finished width of your desired block.
